Walking Queen's Beach in Waikiki (2024)

(June 2024) The windy conditions through some parts of Oahu were great offshore and on the water, evidenced by the sailboats outside of Waikiki. I trust the sailors and captains who take a day - even a "work day"! - to get out on the water and breathe in the salt and breeze...

Don't worry about my grammar. This is not a document on reality...hahaha I type this after rewatching 1999's "Galaxy Quest".

I enjoy walking around Hawaii. So much is familiar, new-to-me, and good to see Still Standing.

Also, Nature is always reminding us that what is created will also need repairs and upkeep.

On this Aloha Sunday, I parked at Kapiolani Park then (we) made an intuitive beeline toward the water. Moving water and open sky is calming for me, as for many, and the sun was a few hours out from setting this Sunday.

New to me was the fencing around a section of sidewalk by Queen's Beach, along the water. It's a raised walkway that buffers the ocean to the park area and during high tide, the waves will crash up against the wall, the splashes sometimes wetting the sidewalk.

(June 2024) A view facing Koko Head direction of the collapsed sidewalk near Queen's Beach in Waikiki. I didn't notice signs indicating how long this section of walkway has been out of commission. Thankfully, it is fenced to prevent folks from general injury to themselves.

A quick search on "Waikiki early years" brought up an article on the stretch of Waikiki Beaches and its landmarks and construction by Robert L. Wiegel (Professor Emeritus Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. University of California), called "Waikiki Beach, Oahu, Hawaii: History of its transformation from a natural to an urban shore". The 2008 article was for the American Shore & Beach Preservation Society.

Now I'm on a deep dive into reading so I'll leave you with a view of one of Diamond Head's surfing spots...
